Natural guide star requirements
  • AO system uses light < 1050nm for guiding
  • Telescope/AO/QE system WFS throughput ~30%
  • Predicted guide star limiting magnitude
    • M_v = 11 (500 Hz), typical
    • M_v = 13 (50 Hz), possible in excellent seeing
    • Lower noise detectors under investigation
  • Correction varies with angular distance from guide star
    • Guide star selectable within ~40 arcsec radius.
  • Performance obtained in 1 asec (vis) seeing
    • K-band, 5 minute exposure, 10 asec guide distance, Strehl = 50%
    • J-band, 5 minute exposure, 10 asec guide distance, Strehl = 10%
  • Support for closed-loop on-chip dithering now implemented
